Classic Car EV converisons by Kustom Bitz
Any vehicle can be converted to electric propulsion and battery power. It is an exciting time for this technology with it being applied to private transport, ie. Peoples cars, daily drivers or classic cars. There are many products available around the world ranging from modest power figures to over 600hp+ so we are really spoilt for choice. Is it the future, I dunno, probably, who knows ….. all I know is it is really cool from a technical stand point. Imagine full engine torque at 0 rpm, that’s tyre turning, rubber burning torque. Yes that’s why a Hot Rod builder and drag racer like myself is taking note of EV tech. Not only that though, I have be working with this technology in manufacturing and mining for most of my working life, 40+ years A grade electrician with engineering training, designing variable speed drive electrical control systems and repairing them when they fail. This is IBGT technology and AC motors. It has been around for decades, so while it all seems new to most people this type of classic car conversion has been happening since the early 1990s, most notably in the USA.

An EV conversion is like any engine conversion in that now the vehicle is classed as a modified car. Yes just as if you were building a hot rod or street machine, an EV conversion has to go through engineering approval with a VASS engineer for VicRoads vehicle registration. This triggers other requirements for classic cars, like for example inertia reel seat belts and collapsible steering column being the most obvious. I have much experience with vehicle compliance having run this restoration business since 2007, combined with my electrical background means I can do the whole job or just help you with what you need.

I supply and install EV conversion kits from AustralianEVS, these are turn key kits made to suit a range of classic cars, for example VW beetle, MGB, Austin Sprite, E type Jag, Early Mercedes, Kingswoods, early Porsche and more being developed. I can adapt any of the AEVS EV conversion kits to suit any vehicle, a custom installation, engineered and tailored to suit your car, along with any restoration work and rego compliance. If you have been thinking if an EV conversion is for you, then we should talk.
